Indian birth certificate for NRIs in Australia

How NRIs in Australia get, correct or replace an Indian birth certificate for visas, citizenship and family applications: name inclusion, late registration and translation.

Updated 30 October 2026

For applications in Australia, you usually need a birth certificate issued by the municipal or local registrar where you were born, showing your full name and both parents' names. If your name is missing, spelled differently or the birth was registered late, fix it at the issuing office before you apply, or prepare supporting evidence. Check the document checklist for your visa, as requirements differ by visa type.

When you need it in Australia

For visas, permanent residence, citizenship and family sponsorship. Australian authorities usually want documents that are not in English translated, and translations made in Australia are usually by a NAATI-certified translator.

Common problems, and the fix

  • No name on the certificate (only "baby boy" or "baby girl"): apply to the registrar to include the name. After the first year this needs a late fee and supporting documents such as a school certificate and parents' affidavit.
  • Name spelled differently from your passport: ask the registrar to correct it, or add a name affidavit and school records as supporting evidence.
  • Birth registered years later: a late-registered certificate is often accepted with supporting evidence such as school records and affidavits from parents or older relatives.
  • No birth record at all: the registrar can issue a non-availability certificate. You then usually apply for late registration, or use it with affidavits and other evidence, depending on what the authority accepts.
  • Lost certificate: ask for a fresh copy (extract) from the same registrar. Many states also issue certificates online.

Step by step from Australia

  1. Check exactly what the authority in Australia asks for: long-form certificate, parents' names, translation, or anything else.
  2. Send us a scan of your existing certificate, passport and school leaving certificate so we can spot problems early.
  3. We apply at the municipal or local registrar where you were born, with your authorisation letter, and follow up in person.
  4. If needed, we arrange affidavits, and an English translation (usually by a NAATI-certified translator if made in Australia).
  5. We courier the original to you in Australia by tracked post, with photos at each hand-over.

Time and cost

A fresh copy of an existing record can take a few days to a few weeks, depending on the city. Name inclusion, corrections and late registration take longer, sometimes a few months. Official fees are paid at actuals with receipts, and SafeNRI's fee is agreed in writing first.

If you need help

See Birth certificate, Affidavits and Document translation. SafeNRI is an independent private service, not affiliated with any government department, municipal body or registrar. You can also apply yourself; our fee is for assisting and representing you, and official fees are charged at actuals with receipts.

Common questions

Do I need to travel to India? Usually not. With an authorisation letter, someone in India can apply and collect for you. A few corrections need a parent's or your own signature, which can often be arranged from abroad.

Is a birth certificate in Hindi or Marathi accepted in Australia? Usually only with a translation. And an English translation (usually by a NAATI-certified translator if made in Australia).

My certificate was issued many years after my birth. Is that a problem? Not always. A late-registered certificate is usually accepted with supporting evidence such as school records and affidavits.
